Kent's Minor Writings on Homeopathy

By  James Tyler KENT, MD

Gypser, K.H., MD, editor. 172 articles, 49 not previously published. Their chronological order lets you follow the evolution of Kent’s thinking.

Review:

To some folks interested in homeopathy "READ YOUR KENT" is an admonishment akin to "EAT YOUR VEGETABLES" or "WASH BEHIND YOUR EARS" . For others, it takes only a line or two of Kent before the sense develops that they are in the presence of an enthusiastic and fiery orator. It never takes long for Kent to warm to his subject and then he is off to the races; painting a picture of this remedy or that state. Most people are quite familiar with his lectures on philosophy and materia medica. Some readers have even enjoyed articles by Kent appearing in old journals. For the ardent Kent fan, Klaus-Henning Gypser's compilation of Kent's Minor Writings on Homeopathy is a boon to homeopathic literature. From concise portraits of little known remedies, peculiar and interesting cases, expansion on his philosophical ideas, to some wonderfully biting sarcasm (A Criticism of Dr. Holmes p. 260 or A Study in Materia Medica p. 305), this book has it all. I consider it Chicken Soup for the Homeopathic Soul so go ahead and READ YOUR KENT!

Commentary
Edited by Klaus-Henning Gypser, MD, this is a scholarly revision of Kent's "Lesser Writings." This book contains only those pieces directly attributable to Kent (i.e., signed by him), and arranged in chronological order of publication. The editor of the previous work, W.W. Sherwood, had split some of the cases away from the articles which had contained them. This volume places it all back together.

The ultimate "Kent Reader." A fascinating study of how Kent developed his ideas, since his thinking can be traced through the chronological order of publication. Original sources for all the material are noted. It contains several articles that were missed by Sherwood in his 1926 work. It does NOT contain the "Aphorisms" since they were only attributed to Kent but never appeared under his signature. Similarly it does not contain the editorial from The Homeopathician in which Kent supposedly discussed prescribing upon pathology, since the editorial in question did not appear under Kent's name, and was probably written by co-editor Julia Loos.
